Dennis Alonzo Benjamin, born May 24, 1984, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly on March 1, 2026, at the age of 41. Though his time here was far too short, the love he poured into the lives of those around him will last forever.
Dennis was truly one of a kind. Known by many as a teddy bear with a heart of gold, he had a gentle spirit, a warm smile, and a laugh that could fill a room. He had a way of making people feel comfortable the moment they met him. Whether you knew Dennis for years or only a short time, you likely walked away feeling like you had gained a friend.
A proud Pittsburgher, Dennis was a devoted fan of his hometown teams and could always be found cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also had love for the UNC Tar Heels and the Chicago Bulls, and he enjoyed watching sports and talking about the game with friends and family. Dennis also had a strong sense of style. He loved a fresh pair of shoes and always appreciated looking and smelling good; no matter how much all those shoes got on Deirdra’s nerves.
More than anything, Dennis loved his family. Dennis married the love of his life, Deirdra, on October 10, 2020. He was a devoted husband and a proud father who worked hard and took great pride in providing for and caring for the people he loved most. His wife and children were the center of his world, and he was passionate about making sure they were safe, supported, and deeply loved.
Dennis also had a special place in his heart for his mother, whom he cared for with great dedication and love. Being there for family was never a burden to Dennis; it was simply who he was.
When Dennis wasn’t spending time with family, he enjoyed playing bingo and connecting with friends online. Through those games and conversations, he formed many friendships with people from all over the country. Dennis never met a stranger; he had a gift for making people feel seen, valued, and welcome.
Dennis leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Deirdra, and their children Jordan, Xavier, Jeremiah, Lonnie “Peanut,” and baby girl Zuri; his mother, Marsha Johnson; his brothers Lonnie Johnson, Kenneth Benjamin, Varick Benson, Richard Nelson, and Theroin Nelson; and his sisters Tina Mosley and Alieia Nelson. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly, along with a host of extended family members and friends whose lives were touched by his kindness and generous spirit.
Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Benjamin, and his mother-in-law, Geraldine Rowe.
Though Dennis may no longer walk beside us, his love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His laughter, kindness, and gentle spirit will never be forgotten.
