Joan Jefferson, age 92, quietly passed away at her home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 1, 2026.
She was born on April 5, 1933, in Beech Bottom, West Virginia to the late Samella and John White. Joan was born three minutes before her identical twin sister and lifelong dearest friend, the late Jean White Brown.
When Joan was about nine years old, the family relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Where she attended Fairywood Elementary School and graduated from South Hills High School in 1951.
On August 17, 1957, Joan married Donald Jefferson in Rochester, New York. From this union, five children were born: Donald Jefferson Jr., Kevin (Cynthia) Jefferson, Donna (Anthony) Jiles, Michael Jefferson and Karen Jefferson.
Joan's gift of singing was evident at a very young age. She sang soprano in a beloved trio alongside her twin sister Jean, who sang alto and their sister Evelyn who played the piano. Family gatherings often found everyone gathered around the piano listening to the trio's music Their musical ministry was highly sought after by local churches, and they traveled throughout the greater Pittsburgh area spreading the gospel.
Joan was deeply passionate about ministry and faithfully served in many capacities. She was a devoted member of the Saturday Night Prayer Band, a group that shared the good news of Jesus Christ throughout the city and led countless individuals to Christ. She also served as Sunday School Superintendent at Lighthouse Church, taught the adult women's Sunday School class at Rodman Missionary Baptist Church, led a nursing home ministry bringing joy to residents, and participated in prison ministry, among many other acts of service.
On June 6, 1987, Joan graduated from the Community College of Allegheny County with an Associate's Degree in Social Work. She worked as a classroom paraprofessional with Pittsburgh Public Schools until her retirement in 1998.
In her later years, Joan enjoyed watching cooking shows and cherished spending time with her family. She often delighted in sharing humorous stories about three of her great-grandchildren, Izzie, Joelle and Dallas, who resided with her.
Joan is survived by her five children, twelve grandchildren, Lamont, RaDawn, Dawnae, Renesha, Ashley, Laschell, Shayla, Jazelle, Erika, Jordan, Kaleb and Jaidyn, a host of great-grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Jefferson, parents, John and Samella White, along with all of her siblings, Elizabeth (White) Harrison, John Jr. (Buck) White, James White, Geneva (White) Pate, Helen (White) Chambers, Irene (White) Raiford, Dorthey (White) Winters, Evelyn (White) Walker, Leatha (White) Magwood, Jean (White) Brown and Carl White.
Words cannot express how deeply she will be missed. While we grieve her absence, we rejoice in knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
